Today we honor the American Flag. The flag represents the aspirations of America – a country formed under the premise that all are created equal and are capable of self-governance.
We still struggle to achieve that “perfect” union, but there is no place on earth that has done more to advance the cause of freedom for all people than America.
The flag represents those aspirations. That is why it means so much to me.
It also represents those who have carried the flag – and the sacrifices they made in the cause of freedom.
My father was buried beneath this flag. He survived the Bataan Death March, but like so many, died young as a result of the injuries and trauma.
That is why I honor the flag today. That is why we should honor the flag everyday.
