Running for office was never an ambition for me.

But I could not stand on the sidelines while ambitious politicians tear our country apart - or drag us into the nightmare of socialism.

For the last 30 years, I’ve focused on solving problems by offering a voice of reason in an often-unreasonable world.  I built a coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business to fight for higher wages and more opportunity for everyone.

That's what I will do in Congress - bring people together to solve problems, create more opportunity, and help residents of the Central Coast build a better quality of life.

24th Congressional candidate Andy Caldwell: Neither party is serving the needs of the people

Andy Caldwell believes he can see government from both sides of the aisle. He spent half his life as a registered Democrat before becoming a Republican.

But Caldwell, who’s challenging incumbent Democrat Salud Carbajal for his 24th Congressional District seat in the House of Representatives, said he doesn’t believe either party is serving the needs of the people any longer. The district encompasses Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, and parts of Ventura County.

Instead of toeing the party line, Caldwell said if he’s elected to the 24th District seat he’ll represent his constituents and vote for logical solutions to issues.

Carbajal backs out of debate.

Congressman Salud Carbajal recently backed out of one debate and has declined multiple requests to participate in public forums with his opponent Andy Caldwell.

Several months ago, KYET scheduled a debate between the two congressional candidates during the first week of February. Last week, Carbajal canceled his acceptance, because he is too busy, Caldwell said.

“All he is doing is campaigning,” Caldwell said. “Carbajal doesn’t see participating in a debate as a duty or obligation to the voters.”

And there may not be another chance for the public to hear the candidates discuss issues. Carbajal has declined requests to participate in debates from both the Santa Maria Times and the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce.

Caldwell urges a call to action to teach children the importance of freedom and demonstrate why socialism is not the answer to our problems.

Andy Caldwell, a candidate for U.S. Congress, spoke last Thursday to the Paso Robles Rotary Club at the Paso Robles Inn’s ballroom.

Caldwell shared that his father was a Batton Death March survivor and taught him the value of hard work.

“The freedom and democratic form of government his father fought for continue to provide the right path forward to prosperity and a better quality of life for all citizens.”

His opponent was offered the opportunity to participate, but chose not to, the report says.
